1870s Book, Middlemarch I & II, Leather Marbelized Middlemarch, Volumes I and II by George Eliot, Rare Sterling Edition Leather Bound, Gilt Marbelized Boards & End Papers This is a very rare antique edition of George Eliot’s Middlemarch, fancy bound in leather with marbelized boards and end papers, both embellished with profuse gilt. On the the title page it says "Illustrated Sterling Edition Middlemarch by George Eliot, Boston, Dana Estes & Company Publishers." Although undated, this book was obviously published very close to the original publication date of Middlemarchin 1872. The boads are bumped at the corners, with a slight tatter at the top of the spine and there is a 1.5" split on the front of the leather on the bound edge. The hinges front and back are unbroken - the text is clean, tight and intact, appearing to never have been read. This book was stored with great care in a local estate.
